Why it works

4 = 2 × 2 and 8 = 2 × 2 × 2, so dividing by them is repeated halving — the mental operation humans do best.

Each halving step keeps the number small and checkable, unlike a long-division snapshot that must be held all at once.

The steps

  1. Halve once. 184 ÷ 2 = 92.
  2. Halve again for ÷4. 92 ÷ 2 = 46. That is 184 ÷ 4.
  3. Halve once more for ÷8. 46 ÷ 2 = 23 would be 184 ÷ 8.

Worked examples

Easy 36 ÷ 4

Show the thinking

36 ÷ 2 = 18

18 ÷ 2 = 9.

Answer: 9

Medium 184 ÷ 4

Show the thinking

184 ÷ 2 = 92

92 ÷ 2 = 46.

Answer: 46

Hard 376 ÷ 8

Show the thinking

376 ÷ 2 = 188

188 ÷ 2 = 94

94 ÷ 2 = 47.

Answer: 47

When to use it

  • Any division by 2, 4, 8, 16 — keep halving until you have divided enough times.
  • Odd intermediate results are fine: 150 ÷ 4 → 75 → 37.5 — the chain handles decimals naturally.

When NOT to use it

  • Divisors that are not powers of two (÷6, ÷12) — halving alone will not reach them.
  • Tiny numbers you already know (32 ÷ 8 = 4).

Common mistakes

Wrong halve count. Answering 92 for 184 ÷ 4 (only one halve). Fix: Count on your fingers: ÷4 = 2 halvings, ÷8 = 3. It sounds childish; it is foolproof.
Losing the target. Halving past the needed count. Fix: Decide the number of halvings BEFORE you start, not while you go.
Check yourself: Reverse the chain: 47 × 8 = 47 doubled three times = 94, 188, 376 ✓.
