25 is a quarter of 100, so dividing by 25 is the same as dividing by 100 and multiplying by 4. The ×4 (double twice) is mental-friendly; the ÷100 is free.
It is the exact mirror of the ×25 multiplication trick — one idea, two directions.
The steps
- Double once. 1,600 × 2 = 3,200.
- Double again. 3,200 × 2 = 6,400.
- Drop two zeros. 6,400 ÷ 100 = 64.
Worked examples
Easy 200 ÷ 25
Show the thinking
200 × 4 = 800
800 ÷ 100 = 8.
Answer: 8
Medium 1,600 ÷ 25
Show the thinking
1,600 × 4 = 6,400
6,400 ÷ 100 = 64.
Answer: 64
Hard 4,375 ÷ 25
Show the thinking
4,375 × 4 = 17,500
17,500 ÷ 100 = 175.
Answer: 175
When to use it
- Any division by 25 — money (quarters), percentages, measurements.
- ÷250 and ÷2,500 follow the same pattern with more zeros dropped.
When NOT to use it
- When the number is already a multiple of 4 the direct route can be as fast — but the doubling route is more dependable under pressure.
- Divisions by other numbers near 25 (÷24, ÷26) — no structure to exploit; estimate instead.
Common mistakes
One doubling only. Multiplying by 2 instead of 4 — the answer is half of correct. Fix: 25 needs TWO doublings; say "double, double" as a unit.
Wrong zero count. Dropping one zero after the ×4. Fix: ÷25 = ×4 ÷ 100 — always two zeros.
